LGBTQIA+ Health & Mental Health

The LGBTQIA+ community is a vibrant tapestry of diversity, creativity, and resilience. Members often cultivate strong support networks that empower them to navigate societal challenges, celebrate their identities, and promote activism. These connections can help to foster a great sense of belonging and community pride, and can enhance overall well-being.

However, the LGBTQIA+ community continue to face unique challenges and concerns that require affirming supports and services.

  • The LGBTQIA+ community continues to face unique challenges, these include but are not limited to the following:

    • Elevated rates of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance use, and eating disorders.

    • Increased risk of suicidality, particularly among LGBTQIA+ youth and transgender individuals.

    • Discrimination in various forms, including employment, housing, healthcare, and social stigma.

    • Prejudice that manifests in societal attitudes and behaviours, contributing to marginalisation.

    • Family rejection.

    • Bullying, both in educational settings and broader society.

    • Higher rates of homelessness, often due to familial rejection or discrimination.

These issues highlight the need for accessible, affirming support services for the community.
